In The Shallows

Film & Animation – 17 min

In the Shallows is a coming-of-age psychological drama that follows a high-school swim prodigy whose life fractures as unresolved guilt manifests itself into a mysterious figure from his past. As the state championship looms with his future hanging in the balance, Jack’s internal struggle becomes impossible to suppress. Through the constant presence of water and repeating visions, the film explores how trauma is internalized and later externalized.

At its core, the film examines morality, interpersonal relationships, and community dynamics. The beach and ocean function as emotional pivot points, playing with the physical manifestation of trauma and the role of masculinity in this process.

Content Note: includes themes of sexual assault and suicide.
